Church History
The Greater 2nd Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church was first named Mount Olive No. 2 Baptist Church. The late Reverend Sherman H. Jordan organized the church on December 21, 1926 in Holly Hall on Hazard Drive. Three years later, in 1929, Rev. Jordan and the congregation moved from Holly Hall into a new frame church located at 811 BonnyView Avenue.
Some years later, the present sanctuary (under the leadership of Rev. J. J. Johnson) was built to face Adkins Street. In 1979, under the leadership of Rev. Charlie Will Heath, the name was changed from Mount Olive No. 2 Baptist Church to the Greater 2nd Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church.
Greater 2nd Mt. Olive has been served by six (6) Pastors since it was organized:
-
Sherman Jordan (1926-1946)
-
Chester Grant (1947-1952)
-
J. J. Johnson (1952-1968)
-
C. W. Heath (1969-1986)
-
W. J. Lawson (1987-1992)
-
Lorenzo L. Heard (1993-Present)
Under the leadership of Rev. Lorenzo L. Heard, Olive South was birthed, giving us one church in two locations.
Through the spirit-led guidance of these dynamic leaders, our church has grown spiritually, financially, and numerically. Each one of them stepped out on faith and took the church to higher heights. We thank God for our faithful membership, because we are united as believers in Christ, growing in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, relying on His atoning sacrifice for justification before God, and depending on the Holy Spirit for sanctification.
ABOUT OUR PASTOR
Rev. lorenzo L. heard
Pastor Lorenzo L. Heard is a native of Leesburg, Lee County, Georgia. Pastor Heard began preaching at the age of seventeen and after three years began his first pastorate at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Patterson, Georgia. In 1987, he became the pastor of the Saint Galilee Baptist Church in Sparta, Georgia. In 1993, he became pastor of the Greater 2ndMt. Olive Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia where he is presently pastoring.
He is a 1981 Graduate of the Lee County High School. After high school, he attended the formerly known FVSC, which is now known as Fort Valley State University and after two years transferred to Morehouse College in Atlanta. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from Albany State University.
With his outstanding ability to lead and relate to people and his commitment to community and citizen building, Pastor Heard along with others have built an outreach program for the East Albany community that is definitely making a difference in the city. Since his arrival at Greater Second Mt. Olive Baptist Church, his commitment to "building a model community that in turn becomes a model church" can be seen in building structures and community programs, but most of all, in the changed lives of people that have been helped by the church and the outreach program.
Under the leadership of Pastor Heard, more than twenty-five hundred people have joined The Greater 2nd Mt. Olive Church family. He is leading his congregation and citizens of the community to be active in their communities, civic organizations and in setting the political agendas of the city. He challenges them to be conscious of world and community issues and to be proactive instead of reactive about how they will affect their lives. He also challenges everyone to be involved in the political system and agendas of the city and the nation by registering to vote and attending community meetings to be aware of the issues.
Pastor Heard has authored two books: "Stuck in a Storm and Missing Your Calm: Discovering God's Purpose for Your Life" and "Lessons in Money Management."
"As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things"
Romans 10:15
